We are at a major turning point in the global clean energy transformation. With the passage of recent landmark legislation, the US is poised to embark on its most ambitious program to date to decarbonize the economy. This makes it more important than ever to cultivate the next generation of scientists, engineers, and other leaders in the hydrogen energy field. To provide students with direct industry knowledge and experience as they prepare to enter the workforce, Nuvera administers a highly structured co-op program that affords a deep dive into advanced clean transportation technology fields, and also provides opportunities for students to pursue their individual interests and direct their own hands-on education.

The six-month Nuvera co-op program is catered primarily to students pursuing engineering degrees, although other disciplines such as science, business and humanities are represented as well. Co-op interns work on projects that help Nuvera advance key initiatives and dive deep into areas they consider worth exploring as they consider vocational paths after graduation. Nuvera partners with schools that offer their students extended internships.

Nuvera is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hyster-Yale Group, a global provider of industrial vehicles and equipment that enables customers to reduce their carbon footprint by offering advanced fuel cell powertrains. This year for the first time, Nuvera co-op students are participating in the new Hyster-Yale intern program which allows them to partake in skills assessments and attend leadership meetings.

“Nuvera’s co-op program provides participants an exciting and unique opportunity to learn and develop their skills and knowledge, and deep exposure to possible career directions,” said Caroline Wright, HR business partner at Nuvera. “Our goal with this program is to engage students interested in engineering and hydrogen fuel cell technology and establish a robust pipeline of promising talent. These individuals will be leaders of the clean energy revolution.”

Beyond their individual day-to-day focus, participating students collaborate to identify and execute a group project. This gives interns the opportunity to work closely with each other, identify issues of common interest that need to be addressed, and makes Nuvera better able to serve its interns, employees, and customers.

The program can also be a path for students seeking jobs after graduation with Nuvera, a dynamic and innovative hydrogen fuel cell technology pioneer with an ever-expanding portfolio of great ideas and inventions. Last year, Nuvera hired two members of a previous intern group as full-time employees, one a fuel cell test engineer and the other a mechanical designer.
