We’re excited to join the nation in celebrating the 10th annual National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day, which commemorates the range and versatility hydrogen and fuel cell technologies offer the nation to reduce carbon emissions while developing domestic energy sources, decarbonizing heavy industry, and driving economic growth and prosperity.
National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day is observed on October 8 (10.08), in recognition of the atomic weight of hydrogen ‒ 1.008. As a founding member of the Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Association (FCHEA), Nuvera recognizes its customers, supplier partners and employees that are driving the hydrogen economy and helping pave the way toward a sustainable, carbon-neutral future.
“The Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy Association, all of our members, and the collective industry, work hard to make every day National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day,” said Frank Wolak, FCHEA President and CEO. “Today marks our tenth annual celebration and since its first iteration in 2014, the United States’ hydrogen sector has grown tremendously. We have moved out of the lab and into the marketplace as a growing industry capable of leveraging the abundant resources and robust industrial sector of our country to spur energy innovation, decarbonization, and economic growth.”
At Nuvera, we know there are many ways hydrogen can make the planet a cleaner, better place to live. Nuvera’s primary focus is powering widespread fuel cell vehicle adoption and remains committed to providing transportation solutions to help companies reach their zero-emission goals. Over the past year, Nuvera has:
- Announced a collaboration withHELINOR Energy, a Norwegian scale up technology and production provider of next generation hydrogen fuel cell and fire suppression modules. HELINOR will fund the development of scalable marine power solutions incorporating Nuvera’s next-generation high-power fuel cell engine technology with HELINOR’s expertise in the maritime industry.
- Joined a European Union-funded maritime decarbonization initiative called APOLO. Nuvera will provide an EN-125 engine to operate on hydrogen derived from ammonia, which is emerging as a key zero-carbon fuel in the maritime sector that can be produced renewably.
- Been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy for $30 million funding award for the manufacture of next-gen fuel cell stacks to support the national clean hydrogen strategy.
- Announced a repeat order from European systems integrator DEVINN, a systems integrator and product development company based in the Czech Republic. DEVINN is using this second engine order for a stationary customer project that will pair Nuvera’s fuel cell technology with an on-site electrolyzer to produce clean electricity and feed it into the grid.
- Unveiled our fuel cell genset and mobile EV rapid charger, HydroCharge™, at the 2024 ACT Expo in Las Vegas. Developed in collaboration with power management services provider Power Innovations International, the zero-emission 30 kVA mobile power generator provides on-site power and EV charging.
- Been granted a $14 million tax credit allocation from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as part of the Qualifying Advanced Energy Project Tax Credit (48C) funded by the Inflation Reduction Act. Nuvera anticipates using the tax credits to expand fuel cell production capacity at our Billerica, Massachusetts headquarters.
- Partnered with Viritech, a United Kingdom-based developer of hydrogen powertrain solutions for the automotive, aerospace, marine and distributed power sectors, to deploy a fuel cell electric vehicle powertrain for on-road vehicles and showcase a fuel cell engine-powered race car at the LCV Cenex in the UK.
- Collaborated with Hyster-Yale Materials Handling to power a Hyster® ReachStacker. This fuel cell container handler, shown below, has been recognized by three prestigious sustainability award programs. It was named one of the year’s best sustainable products by the BIG Sustainability Awards and won a Green GOOD DESIGN Award for sustainable transportation solutions. Additionally, it is a finalist for the Global Good Awards in the Game Changing Innovation of the Year category, highlighting its role in advancing eco-friendly, zero-emission container handling.
Looking ahead, we are excited to be demonstrating our HydroCharge™ mobile power solution for on-site power and EV charging from the Fresno, California location of Papé Material Handling. Those interested in seeing the operational unit firsthand should contact us.
Nuvera’s successful deployments over the past year demonstrate that our solutions can meet and exceed emissions regulations and mandates in the transportation industry, whether on roads, at worksites or at ports. We celebrate with our colleagues today as well as our peers who are helping make hydrogen a primary solution for a greener and cleaner future.
We believe hydrogen energy and fuel cell technologies offer a clear pathway for America to reach its decarbonization goals while boosting economic growth, creating high-quality jobs, and spurring advanced American manufacturing and export opportunities. We are proud to be the recipient of multiple funding awards from the U.S. government over the past year, which demonstrate the Biden Administration’s strong support for hydrogen as a clean energy solution.
