Making Ports Greener
Port and maritime applications are in the vanguard as drivers for accelerating hydrogen adoption. Container handling and other diesel equipment used around the clock at shipping ports are a source of significant local air pollution and greenhouse gases, compounded by emissions from heavy-duty trucks that travel within and beyond port boundaries and from vessels approaching from the sea or used in the harbor.
Diesel-powered vehicles and equipment that can be replaced with fuel cell electric powertrains include the following:
- Cranes and gantries
- Empty and laden container handlers
- Terminal tractors
- Drayage trucks and other commercial vehicles
- Buses
Equipped with green hydrogen infrastructure, ports will be at the epicenter of global clean energy transformation. Hydrogen-powered vehicles meet the intensive duty cycles, unpredictable and long-distance routes, charging infrastructure uncertainty, and high auxiliary power requirements of many heavy-duty work cycles associated with port operations.
Zero-emission Nuvera® E-Series Fuel Cell Engines can meet both motive and stationary power needs within port ecosystems.
Nuvera works with Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc. to deliver high-performance hydrogen alternatives to diesel vehicles and equipment. Nuvera fuel cell solutions can enable shipping ports to reduce their carbon footprint, eliminate diesel emissions, and lower noise pollution for workers and nearby communities.
Fuel Cell Hyster® Top-Pick
Nuvera has powered a Hyster® top-pick container handler with two Nuvera E-45 Fuel Cell Engines at the Port of Los Angeles in Long Beach, California. The zero-emissions container handler is in operation at Fenix Marine Services, a terminal operator owned by the CMA CGM Group. The project is funded by the California Air Resources Board and an initiative of California Climate Investments.
Fuel Cell Hyster® ReachStacker
Nuvera is powering a hydrogen fuel cell reach stacker that Hyster has developed and shipped to the Port of Valencia in Spain. The container handler is currently in operation at MSC, one of the largest container terminals in Europe. It is part of the H2Ports project, which aims to introduce hydrogen-powered vehicles and equipment in port operations.
Yard truck brand Capacity and Hyster-Yale Group are developing a hydrogen fuel cell electric terminal tractor that will arrive at the HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort in Hamburg, Germany later this year.
The zero-emission terminal tractor integrated with a Nuvera hydrogen fuel cell will run on hydrogen fuel produced locally at the HHLA Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub.

Hydrogen fuel cells (HFCs) are emerging as a transformational solution for powering electric container handlers. Essential for loading and unloading shipping containers at ports and terminals, container handling equipment has traditionally relied on diesel engines, which contribute to carbon emissions and impact local air quality. Hydrogen-powered electric container handlers offer a promising alternative, combining the […]
